When you need to bring goods temporarily into Indonesia and then send them back out, there are two main ways: ATA Carnet or Import → Re-export. Both work, but the process and paperwork are a bit different.
At Forin Logistics, we make sure whichever option you choose runs smoothly, so you don’t get stuck with unexpected costs or delays.
1. ATA Carnet – the “passport for goods”
What it is: An ATA Carnet is an international customs document that allows you to bring in goods temporarily without paying duties or taxes.
Who issues it: In Indonesia, it’s handled by KADIN (Indonesian Chamber of Commerce).
What it covers in Indonesia:
Goods for exhibitions and trade fairs
Professional equipment (like filming gear, tools, or demo machines)
(Commercial samples are not covered in Indonesia)
How it works: You get the Carnet from your home country’s chamber, show it at customs when entering and leaving Indonesia, and that’s it — no extra guarantees or deposits.
Best for: Trade shows, product demos, filming or production gear, testing equipment.
2. Import → Re-export (Indonesia’s own system)
If ATA Carnet doesn’t fit your case, you can use Indonesia’s customs procedures:
A. Temporary Import (Impor Sementara)
What it is: You bring goods into Indonesia for a short period and promise to take them back out.
What’s needed:
A customs guarantee (deposit or bank bond) to cover duties and taxes.
You may get full exemption (no duty at all) or partial relief (small duty calculated by how long the goods stay).
Key rule: The goods must leave Indonesia within the allowed time (extensions possible if needed).
B. Re-export (Ekspor Kembali)
What it is: If goods have already been imported but need to be sent back (for example: wrong shipment, damaged, not as ordered), you apply for a re-export permit.
What’s needed: An application to Customs with supporting documents. Once approved, the goods can leave Indonesia.
Which option is right for you?
Your situation | Best option |
---|---|
You’re bringing in goods for a show, demo, or filming, and they’ll leave unchanged | ATA Carnet |
You need to bring in items that aren’t covered by Indonesia’s Carnet system | Temporary Import |
Goods have already been imported but must be returned (wrong, damaged, not suitable) | Re-export |
